App development cost in India (2026): what ₹75,000 to ₹25 lakh actually buys
Price bands from Indian studios, the six decisions that move the price, the store fees and yearly costs people forget, and when a website does the job instead.
"App banane mein kitna kharcha aayega?" Ask five app developers in Indore and you'll hear five answers, from ₹15,000 to ₹15 lakh. Both can be honest: they're quoting for very different apps. This guide explains what actually drives the price of an app in India in 2026, the costs people forget, what you'll spend over three years, and when you don't need an app at all.
The short answer
For a business app built by an Indian studio, published on both Android and iPhone with an admin panel for your team, expect roughly:
| What you're building | Typical price in India | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Focused MVP: one kind of user, login, payments, admin | ₹75,000 – ₹2,50,000 | 6–10 weeks |
| Business app: customers plus staff, notifications, integrations | ₹2,50,000 – ₹8,00,000 | 2–4 months |
| Marketplace or delivery app: customers, vendors and riders, live tracking | ₹8,00,000 – ₹25,00,000+ | 4–9 months |
These bands match what Indian studios publish: simple apps and MVPs at about ₹50,000 to ₹2.5 lakh (PS Digitise, WebGrowEx), most small-business apps at ₹4 to ₹12 lakh (Algosoft), and mid-sized cross-platform apps at ₹8 to ₹20 lakh (Vxplore). These are vendors' own figures, so treat them as a range, not a rate card.
Our own apps and MVPs start at ₹75,000 (before GST) for Android and iPhone together, with a web admin, usually in 6–8 weeks. More on what that buys below.
What actually drives the price
Screens don't set the price. Decisions do. These six move it most:
- How many kinds of user. A customer app with an admin is one project. Customers, shop owners and delivery riders, each with their own app or mode, is three projects that have to agree with each other.
- Payments and money. UPI checkout through a gateway like Razorpay is routine. Wallets, refunds, split payments to vendors and GST invoices for each one add real work.
- Live and location features. Live order tracking, rider assignment and maps cost more than any screen, because they have to work on a moving phone with a patchy network.
- Working offline. Salesmen and field staff often lose signal. An app that saves orders offline and syncs later is worth it, but it is extra work.
- Connections to what you already use. Tally exports, WhatsApp messages, SMS, e-invoicing and your existing website or software.
- Design. A clear, tested design costs a little upfront and saves a lot of rework. Skipping it is the most expensive saving in app development.
Platform matters less than it used to. Building two separate native apps, one for Android and one for iPhone, roughly doubles the work. Cross-platform frameworks such as Flutter build both from one codebase, which is why most Indian business apps are now made that way and why cross-platform quotes come in well below native ones (Vxplore).
Freelancer, local studio or big agency?
Who builds the app changes the price as much as what you build:
- Marketplace listings and freelancers start very low. Indore listings on IndiaMART advertise app development from about ₹50,000 per app (IndiaMART) and day rates around ₹5,000 (IndiaMART). Fine for a simple app if you can write a tight brief and test it yourself.
- Local studios cost more but give you design, an admin, testing, store submission and someone to call after launch.
- Large agencies in metros quote the most, and often pass the work to a junior team.
Indian developer rates range from about ₹800 to ₹4,500 an hour depending on who you hire (Algosoft). A low hourly rate on an unclear scope is how ₹50,000 quotes become ₹2 lakh invoices.
The costs people forget
The build is only part of it. Budget for these from day one:
| Cost | How much | How often |
|---|---|---|
| Google Play developer account | US$25 (about ₹2,200) | once (Google) |
| Apple Developer Program | US$99 (about ₹8,700) | every year (Apple) |
| Server and admin hosting | a few thousand to a few tens of thousands of ₹ | every year |
| Maintenance and OS updates | about 15–20% of the build price | every year (CodeXcelerate) |
| SMS, WhatsApp and payment gateway fees | per message and per transaction | as you use them |
Maintenance is not optional for an app the way it can be for a website. Google and Apple release new versions of Android and iOS every year and raise the minimum requirements for apps in their stores, so an app nobody updates eventually can't be updated in the store at all.
Do Google and Apple take 15–30% of your sales? Not if you sell physical goods or real-world services. Apple's rules let goods and services used outside the app, like groceries, flowers, deliveries or appointments, be paid with methods other than in-app purchase (App Review Guidelines 3.1.3(e)), and Google's payments policy excludes physical goods from Google Play billing (Google Play payments policy). You pay your normal gateway fees instead. Store commissions apply to digital items, like premium content or in-app subscriptions.
What you'll spend over three years
An example, using our starting price and the costs above. Your numbers will differ, but the shape is typical:
| Year 1 | Year 2 | Year 3 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Build (MVP, Android + iPhone + admin) | ₹75,000 | ||
| Maintenance (15% a year, after the first year) | ₹11,250 | ₹11,250 | |
| Apple Developer Program | ₹8,700 | ₹8,700 | ₹8,700 |
| Google Play account | ₹2,200 | ||
| Hosting (example) | ₹6,000 | ₹6,000 | ₹6,000 |
| Total | ₹91,900 | ₹25,950 | ₹25,950 |
About ₹1.44 lakh over three years, before GST, messaging and gateway fees. Ask any developer you speak to for the same three-year view. A cheap build with an expensive yearly contract is common.
Do you need an app at all?
Often, no. An app is worth it when people come back to you often: weekly orders, monthly bookings, daily use by your own staff. For everything else, a website or a web app that opens in the phone's browser does the job for less.
A website is enough if: customers find you, check you're real and call or WhatsApp you. That's most shops, clinics and service businesses. See what a website costs in Indore.
A web app is enough if: staff, dealers or customers need to log in and do things, but don't need notifications or offline use. It works on every phone with nothing to install. Our custom web apps start at ₹90,000.
An app makes sense if:
- customers reorder every week or month, and a home-screen icon and push notifications bring them back,
- your salesmen or delivery staff work from their phones all day, sometimes without signal,
- you want customers to pay, track and reorder in a couple of taps,
- your competitors' apps are already on your customers' phones.
What our starting price buys
Our app / MVP package starts at ₹75,000 (before GST) and usually takes 6–8 weeks:
- design first: user flows and a clickable prototype you try on your own phone before we write code (app design),
- one app for Android and iPhone, built in Flutter,
- a web admin for your team: orders, customers, notifications and reports,
- login and UPI payments,
- Play Store and App Store launch under your own developer accounts,
- a test build on your phone every Friday, and 30 days of free fixes after launch.
What pushes a project above the starting price: more kinds of user, live tracking, offline sync, and connections to other software. You get a fixed price after a free call, and it doesn't change unless the scope does.
How to get a quote you can trust
Before you talk to any app developer, in Indore or anywhere else, write down:
- Who uses the app, and what each of them needs to get done.
- The must-haves for version one. Everything else goes on a "later" list.
- Two or three apps you like, and what you like about them.
- Who in your business will run it day to day.
Then ask every developer the same questions:
- Is the price fixed, and what exactly is included?
- Do I get the code, and are the app store accounts in my name?
- Will I see a working build every week, or only at the end?
- What does maintenance cost each year, and what does it cover?
- Can I pay per milestone, only for work I've seen?
If you'd like us to be one of those quotes, tell us about your app. A free 20-minute call, and you leave with a rough scope and a price range in ₹.
