Tally.ERP 9 support has ended: upgrade, switch or build custom billing?
What really changed on 16 August 2026, what TallyPrime, Vyapar, myBillBook and Zoho Books cost, and the few cases where custom billing software is the better answer.
If your business still runs on Tally.ERP 9, you've probably heard that "Tally ERP 9 is closed." That's not quite right, and the difference matters before you spend money. This guide explains what actually changed on 16 August 2026, what your real options cost, and when (rarely) custom billing software is the better answer.
We build custom billing software, so we'll say this upfront: for most shops and traders, custom software is not the right first step. Read on and decide for yourself.
What actually ended on 16 August 2026
Tally Solutions' own page is clear: "From 16th August 2026, TSS renewal on Tally.ERP 9 will be discontinued for all customers." The same page says Tally.ERP 9 "will continue to work" (Tally Solutions).
So:
- Your software still opens and your data is still there.
- You can no longer renew TSS (Tally Software Services) on ERP 9. TSS is what brings product updates and connected features.
- The upgrade to TallyPrime is free if your TSS was active on or after 9 November 2020. If it lapsed before that, a paid upgrade applies. Ask a Tally partner for the exact price for your licence.
You may see claims that the free upgrade "ends on 15 August" or costs 40% of the licence fee. We couldn't find that on Tally's own pages, so check with Tally or an authorised partner before acting on it.
Is it safe to stay on Tally.ERP 9?
For a while, yes. In the long run it gets riskier:
- GST keeps changing, and without TSS you won't get updates for future changes on ERP 9. For example, larger taxpayers (aggregate turnover of ₹10 crore or more) have had to report e-invoices within 30 days of the invoice date since 1 April 2025 (GSTN advisory).
- Your data probably lives on one computer. Ransomware was involved in 88% of breaches at smaller organisations in Verizon's 2025 report (Verizon DBIR SMB snapshot, which defines "small" more broadly than Indian MSMEs). Whatever you decide, take a backup today and test that it restores.
First, size your business
Before comparing software, answer three questions:
1. Do you need e-invoicing? E-invoicing is mandatory once your aggregate turnover has crossed ₹5 crore in any year since 2017-18 (EY on Notification 10/2023). Most businesses don't: in June 2026, about 8.56 lakh businesses generated e-invoices, out of about 1.67 crore active GST taxpayers, which is roughly 5% (GSTN, 9 Years of GST report). Madhya Pradesh alone has over 6 lakh active taxpayers in the same report.
2. How many people need access, and from where? One person at the shop counter is very different from five people across a shop, a godown and the road.
3. What do you really need beyond billing? Party-wise rates, schemes, credit limits, multiple godowns, salesman orders. These decide whether a ready-made tool fits.
Option A: upgrade to TallyPrime
Best if your CA already works in Tally, your accounts are the main need, and your staff know Tally.
| TallyPrime (prices exclude 18% GST) | One-time licence | Yearly TSS after year 1 | Or rental |
|---|---|---|---|
| Silver (1 user) | ₹22,500 | ₹4,500 | ₹8,100 a year |
| Gold (unlimited users on your office network) | ₹67,500 | ₹13,500 | ₹24,300 a year |
Source: Tally's cost of ownership guide, July 2026.
Over five years, Silver costs about ₹40,500 and Gold about ₹1,21,500 before GST, whether you buy or rent. Remote access (working from home or the godown over the internet) is a separate paid add-on, Tally on Cloud, listed from ₹600 per user per month.
Option B: switch to Vyapar, myBillBook or Zoho Books
Best for shops and small traders who want simple billing, GST invoices on the phone, and a low yearly cost.
| Tool | Price (checked Oct 2026) | Users | E-invoice / e-way bill |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vyapar (desktop) | Silver ₹3,799/yr, Gold ₹4,099/yr | Multi-user, sync on Gold | On Gold |
| myBillBook | Plus ₹3,490/yr, Pro ₹3,990/yr, Pro Max higher | 1 user + CA (Plus/Pro), 3 + CA (Pro Max) | E-invoice on Pro Max only |
| Zoho Books | Free under ₹25 lakh revenue; Standard ₹749/month (billed yearly) | 3 users on Standard, more on higher plans | E-invoicing from Standard |
Sources: Vyapar, myBillBook, Zoho Books. These companies change prices and plan features often, and not every page says whether GST is included, so confirm on their sites.
Before switching, check: whether your CA can work with it, how you'll move your old ledgers, and whether you can export all your data if you ever leave.
Option C: custom billing software
Custom makes sense only in specific situations:
- you sell with party-wise rates and schemes that ready-made tools can't model,
- you run several godowns and need stock moving between them,
- salesmen or retailers place orders that should flow straight into billing (see our guide to ordering portals for distributors),
- you need credit limits enforced before goods leave,
- you've already tried ready-made tools and they forced workarounds in Excel.
It also carries real risk, and you should know the research:
- A review of 55 studies on failed ERP projects found the top causes were lack of owner involvement, inadequate training and poor project management, with lack of top-management support hitting hardest in Asia (Journal of Business Technology, 2023).
- Across 1,471 IT projects, Oxford researchers found that about 1 in 6 overran its budget by an average of around 200% (Flyvbjerg & Budzier). Those were mostly large projects, but the lesson is the same: fix the scope before you start.
- Studies of build-versus-buy decisions find that building pays off mainly when the organisation can actually support the system it builds (Javeed et al., 2022).
Our approach to keep that risk small: fixed scope and price before we start, a working demo every week, and billing that sits alongside Tally. Your CA keeps doing accounts in Tally, and your billing, stock and credit run in software built around how you trade.
What it costs with us: a focused billing and stock system is ₹90,000 to ₹2,50,000, usually 4–8 weeks, with optional maintenance at about 15% of the build price a year. There's no per-user licence. See billing and inventory software.
A quick way to decide
- Under ₹5 crore turnover, one or two users, simple pricing? Vyapar, myBillBook or Zoho Books. Choose the one your CA is comfortable with.
- Your CA and staff live in Tally, accounts-heavy business? Upgrade to TallyPrime (free if your TSS was active on or after 9 Nov 2020).
- Many users, godowns, party-wise rates, credit control, salesman orders? Talk to a few vendors first. If none fits without Excel workarounds, consider custom billing alongside Tally.
Migration checklist (whichever option you choose)
- Take a full backup of your Tally.ERP 9 data and test that it restores on another computer.
- Close the books at a clean point, ideally a quarter-end.
- Check opening balances, party masters, stock items, HSN codes and GST rates in the new system.
- Run the old and new systems side by side for a few weeks and compare totals.
- Train every person who will use it. Training is the factor projects most often skip.
- Get your CA to sign off before you stop using the old system.
Common questions
Will Tally.ERP 9 stop working?
No. Tally says it will continue to work. What stopped is TSS renewal on ERP 9.
Is the upgrade to TallyPrime free?
Yes, if your TSS was active on or after 9 November 2020. Otherwise a paid upgrade applies.
Should I buy custom billing software instead?
Usually not as a first step. Custom makes sense when your pricing, schemes, godowns or credit rules don't fit ready-made tools.
Can custom software work with Tally?
Yes. Billing and stock can run in custom software and export to Tally for your accountant.
Which is cheapest?
For a single user with simple needs, the phone-first apps (from about ₹3,500–₹4,100 a year) or Zoho Books' free plan. Over five years, TallyPrime Silver costs about ₹40,500 before GST.
How this guide was made: we used AI tools to help research and draft it. Prices were checked on the vendors' websites in October 2026 and change often, so confirm before buying. Our own price range is our estimate for a typical project.
